Last night, I told ChatGPT that I am sitting here feeling like a techie princess…
Typing on a Logi pebble keyboard that can switch back and forth from my iPhone to my iPad with one click of a button.
Listening to a “Calm Music for Reading” playlist from Spotify on my iPhone.
I told ChatGPT I can control the music volume from my keyboard’s tiny little pebble buttons on my favorite Treblab earbuds.
I was simultaneously playing NYT Spelling Bee on my iPad, looking up clues on my iPhone. And asking ChatGPT for clues when my NYT Spelling Bee Buddy failed to prompt the word in my brain.
Sitting with hubby in the romantic glow of LED candles, another of my latest tech obsessions.
My pebble keyboard lit by a cool new purple booklight that wraps around my neck.
Then I went to bed when my Apple watch told me it was time and read one of the hundreds of ebooks on my Kindle app for iOS. I do love a good old-fashioned paper book, but our little townhouse is maxed out by my library of “real” books. So, Libby and the Kindle store feed my need to read.
I told ChatGPT that I had been resistant to audiobooks for a long time, since I can read faster than they can speak. That is until I discovered free audiobooks on Spotify, and now I am in love with memoirs read by their authors and am branching out into authors reading their own fiction and nonfiction.
I’ve always been a techie ever since I had my hands on the giant computer in my high school math teacher’s room in the early 1980s. Yes, there was only one computer in the room. It was his, but as his assistant during my senior year, I got access to help him with DOS programming for calculating grades.
Since then, I’ve had Macs and PCs and a variety of laptops. I’ve had Palm Pilots and iPod Shuffles and some prehistoric Radio Shack thing that kept your Rolodex contacts electronically. My first laptop was my beloved IBM ThinkPad – I think it weighed 20 pounds. I used it as a door stop for a while after I upgraded to a new laptop.
I bought my first cell phone in 1993 when I was pregnant with my daughter. Some of those first phones were huge! I did love my red Razr and BlackBerry Pearl though. Oh, my BlackBerry with the amazing full keyboard was the best, but when the BlackBerry stopped keeping up with the times, I bought my first iPhone.
I adore the sensual Apple packaging experience and hope they never stop making it a beautiful visual and tactile experience. I have to take my new Apple gadget to a quiet space where I can be alone and take my time opening the delightful boxes. They feel so good and encase the gadget like an elegant glove.
I resisted the Apple watch for many years, because I have the time on my iPhone, but now I am hooked. The beauty of the packaging led to an even more beautiful on-wrist sensory experience. The first watch I ever had was a Cinderella watch I adored, but my Apple watch is now part of my wardrobe. Time, weather, stock market indices, and my fitness activity all on my wrist with a different pretty background whenever the mood strikes
Yes, I’m definitely a Techie Princess. I may not know how all these gadgets work, but I know what they bring to my life. Books and music are always within reach, curiosity is just a click away, and even an ordinary evening can become something special. I don’t have to understand the technology behind the magic to enjoy the magic itself. And frankly, I think that’s a pretty wonderful way to reign over my little kingdom.
